Responsibility

Responsibility - How we turn 14-year-olds into adults

Project-Based Learning: Project-based Learning, also known as PBL, is a collaborative learning system where learners are tasked with applying the information they have learned in class to real-world situations. This allows learners to learn important skills like work ethic, time management, collaboration, communication, networking,  and problem-solving from the moment they begin high school.

Project Management: Learners are tasked with managing their projects and their work deadlines. This forces them to learn how to work under time restraints and create a product they can present.

Group Contracts: When learners are assigned a new project they start by making a group contract. This contract binds their group members and themselves to completion of their work, communication with team members, and attendance of class. If the standards that the group sets aren’t met, group members can be “fired” which means that they will need to complete the project on their own. This helps learners develop teamwork skills and teaches them the importance of keeping to their commitments.

Mentoring: Upperclassmen at New Tech are allowed to sign up for the Den mentoring program. This program puts your learner in charge of other learners where they can guide them through activities and workshops. This gives the Den mentors a chance to test their leadership skills and to lead a group of people their age.

No bells: The lack of bells at New Tech allows learners to take charge of their schedule and leaves them with the responsibility of being where they need to be when they need to be there. This allows our learners to practice and develop their time management skills which are crucial in everyday life.

Internships: We offer internships to our students to allow them to gain work experience through working part-time jobs or shadowing people in our different professions. This can give the learner the ability to experience the field that they are interested in pursuing.
